North Korea celebrates for Kim il Sung soon after rocket launch failed

April 16, 2012 Society and Politics No comments , ,

North Korea celebrates for Kim il-sung's birth.

Three days ago – April 13 2012 – North Korea tried to launch a satellite but the rocket broke apart 81 seconds after its launch at 7:38 a.m., and the UN officials said “North Korea actions ‘deplorable’ “. Soon after North Korea held a celebration marking 100 years since the birth of the deceased General Secretary of North Korea Communist party – Kim il Sung- his grandfather.

As we know the communist regime of North Korea once was considered to a  country which supported extremism and terrorism. Similar regimes can be found in Soviet Union, Cuba, and former eastern Europe communist countries, and especially the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. What is Communist Terrorism? The definition of Communist Terrorism are actions carried out by groups wich adhere to a Marxist-Leninist or Maoist ideology. These state actions of the regimes above have all been described as terrorism. Non-state communist groups such as the Red Brigades, Front Line and the Red Army Faction have also engaged in acts of terrorism. These groups hope that through these actions they will inspire the masses to rise up and overthrow the existing political and economic system.

I can foresee the communist regime of North Korea will fall soon, maybe in ten years. When the Mid-East becomes peaceful. The Kim family has ruled this poor country and her people more than fifty years. They trample freedom and democracy. Soon they will pay for their sins. Like in movie “The Shawshank Redemption” the Holy Bible says “His judgement cometh and that Right Soon”.

Pyongyang, North Korea (CNN) — North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un spoke before hundreds of troops and others in Pyongyang on Sunday as part of a massive, orchestrated celebration marking 100 years since the birth of the nation’s founder, his grandfather.

Kim’s address was his first televised speech since assuming the country’s leadership.

The remarks, which touched on a number of issues including the significance of North Korea’s military, regularly stirred applause from the crowd.

“Our military has become a powerful military capable of handling any kind of modern warfare, with complete offensive and defensive tactics,” Kim said. “The foreign powers are not the only ones with military supremacy anymore. And the days of their threatening and lying to us with atomic weapons is forever gone.”

Kim also vowed never to let the country starve.

“Our fellow citizens, who are the best citizens in the world, who have overcome countless struggles and hardships, it is our party’s firmest resolve not to let our citizens go hungry again,” he said.

Much of Kim’s roughly 20-minute talk focused on the importance of the revolution spearheaded by his grandfather, saying that it was the North Korean government’s responsibility to work to realize the movement’s aspirations and live up to its values.

Deemed the Eternal President, Kim’s grandfather — Kim Il Sung — was born on August 15, 1912. Some 33 years later, following North Korea’s liberation from Japan, he pledged in Pyongyang to build a nation on wealth, strength and knowledge.

The grandson, Kim Jong Un, is now North Korea’s “supreme commander” — a title he has recently assumed, following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il.

Elaborate and extensive 100th anniversary celebrations of Kim Il Sung’s birth have been in the works for years.

One of those milestones was the Friday launch of a long-range rocket — a move deplored by the United States and many others in the international community, even after it prematurely broke apart and failed to escape the Earth’s atmosphere.

On Sunday, state TV showed video of large blocks of North Korean troops as they marched in tight formation. Music was interspersed at times by coordinated chants, while military officials could be seen saluting from vehicles that drove past tanks lined up in the square.

The dignosis of diabetes mellitus

April 9, 2012 Diabetes No comments , , ,

There are many types of diabetes mellitus. In general there are four types of diabetes. They are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, other specific types of diabetes, and gestational diabetes.

American Diabetes Association.

Type 1 diabetes results from β-cell destruction, usually leading to absolute insulin deficiency. Type 2 diabetes results from a progressive insulin secretory defect on the background of insulin resistance. Other specific types of diabetes due to other causes, e.g. genetic defects in β-cell function, genetic defects in insulin action, diseases of the exocrine pancreas etc. And the gestational diabetes mellitus is diagnosed during pregnancy that is not clearly overt diabetes.

There also are three criterias for the diagnosis of diabetes. They are the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) [≥126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L)] which is defined as no caloric intake for at least 8 hours, the 2-h value in the 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) [≥200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L).] which uses a glucose load containing the equivalent of 75 g anhydrous glucose dissolved in water, and the A1C test [≥6.5%].

But note that all the three criterias above should be repeated for confirmation before the diagnosis is clear, unless that the patient has classic symptoms of hyperglycemia or hyperglycemic crisis, and simultaneously his or her random plasma glucose ≥200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L). It is that the diagnosis of diabetes shall be clear.

A1C assay is a good way for the diagnosis of diabetes. It has many advantages compared to the FPG and OGTT, including greater convenience, evidence to suggest greater preanalytical stability, and less day-to-day perturbations during periods of stress and illness. But A1C assay is not perfect. It costs more, and the there is incomplete correlation between A1C and average glucose in certain individuals.

Also A1C inaccurately reflects glycemia with certain anemias and hemoglobinopathies. For example in conditions with abnormal red cell turnover, such as pregnancy, recent blood loss or transfusion, or some anemias, the diagnosis of diabetes must employ glucose criteria exclusively rather than A1C.

As we discussed above there are four different types mothod to diagnose diabetes and the test should be repeated to rule out laboratory error. Unless the diagnosis is clear on clinical grounds, such as a patient with a hyperglycemic crisis or classic symptoms of hyperglycemia and a random plasma glucose ≥200 mg/dL.

It is preferable that the same test be repeated for confirmation, since there will be a greater likelihood of concurrence in this case. For example, if the A1C is 7.0% and a repeat result is 6.8%, the diagnosis of diabetes is confirmed. However, if two different tests are both above the diagnostic thresholds, the diagnosis of diabetes is also confirmed. On the other hand, if two different test are available in an individual and the results are discordant, the test whose result is above the diagnostic cut point should be repeated, and the diagnosis is made on the basis of the confirmed test. That is, if a patient meets the diabetes criterion of the A1C (two results ≥6.5%) but not the FPG (≤126 mg/dL or 7.0 mmol/L), or vice versa, that person should be considered to have diabetes.

Also it is possible that when a test whose result was above the diagnostic threshold is repeated, the second value will be below the diagnostic cut point. This is least likely for A1C, somewhat more likely for FPG, and most likely for the 2-h PG. Barring a laboratory error, such patients are likely to have test results near the margins of the threshold for a diagnosis. The health care professional might opt to follow the patient closely and repeat the testing in 3-6 months.

Goodbye world of warcraft

April 3, 2012 Entertainment No comments , ,

On June 6, 2005 a big bomb was stroke into the market of online video games. That’s right and the heavy weight is named “The World of Warcraft” (WOW). At the beginning I was interested in the video game but I didn’t register a account because the game is a little expensive, whom you can play 4,000 minutes online in with 30 RMB. In 2005 I was a grade two pharmacy student and many of my classmates and roommates were passionate and infatuated with WOW. I remember at that time the top level of a character or role you play was sixty.

At present my last logining to WOW was on January 20, 2012. That is I haven’t logined to WOW from more than two months. As mentioned above I didn’t join the WOW game when it firstly came into China. Now I cannot remember the accurate date when I firstly registered my WOW account. I think maybe the date I registered my WOW account was just approximately on Fall, 2005 when we grade 3 students moving from the Jiang An campus to West China campus of Sichuan University.

One of my characters in World of Warcraft.

So now it has been nearly seven years since I joined this online video games. I remember that in 2005, at the beginning of WOW in China. The top level was sixty and there were nine different classes who were Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior. There were two camps for choosing, the Alliance and the Horde. In the old sixty-level era there were only four races in both Alliance and Horde you can choose when creating a role. In the Alliance they were Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf and in the Horde they were Forsaken, Orc, Tauren, Troll. Other new races for choosing were Draenei, Worgen, Blood Elf and Goblin, who  appeared in the expansion packs of WOW well known as ”The Burning Crusade”, “Wrath of The Lich King” and “Cataclysm”. My first character is a male Human mage and I spent years of time on him. (more…)

Online electrocardiogram for healthcare pharmacists

April 1, 2012 Cardiology No comments ,

Months ago when I was visiting Twitter I found an useful site about electrocardiogram (ECG) website. The website is built for cardiology. There are many informatics about cardiology, especially the electrocardiogram. There is a cardiac rhythm simulator which can simulate many kinds of cardiac rhythm, including normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms.

A regular sinus rhythm in lead II.

There are sinus rhythm, sinus bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, sinus arrhythmia, sinus exit block and so on. You can view a dynamic electrocardiogram and you can pause it at any time. I found there are twenty-five kinds of cardiac rhythm, normal or abnormal, in total. And the website posts out the simple definition of each kind of cardiac rhythm. Juniors can start from here.

Often to realize electrocardiogram is very difficulty for juniors. Even many physicians in China cann’t understand it competely. Also the website told visitors how to realize electrocardiogram and how to manage cardiac emergencies. The content about electrocardiogram includes cardiac anatomy, the ECG & cardiac output, cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac monitoring system and so on. The content is very detailed.

For example we can see Atrial Flutter on the content, then you click the Atrial Flutter and there will be the electrocardiogram and definition of Atrial Flutter. Just like the picuture show below. You will see the feature of Atrial Flutter both in picture and letters. The webpage will tell you what the electrocardiogram shape of Atrial Flutter is and how to readily identify it. Here in the picture it was described that Atrial Flutter is readily identified by the sawtooth baseline.

The electrocardiogram of Atrial Flutter.

I think this website will be very useful for healthcare pharmacist so I post out it here. You can find what you want here:

Pharmacy schools in U.S. and Doctor of Pharmacy program

April 1, 2012 Pharmacy Education No comments ,

Today I want to write down some litters about pharmacy schools in United States and the differences of pharmacy schools between U.S. and China. In this blog I mainly introduce the UCSF School of Pharmacy. UCSF is the short name for Univeristy of California, San Francisco. According the ranking of USNEWS, UCSF School of Pharmacy is the best one among pharmacy schools in United States. In China, West China School of Pharmacy is the top best five pharmacy schools in mainland at present.

Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) is a professional degree program which is very common in United States. Please note that it dosen’t equals the degree Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). It’s a professional program that particularly trian students to become tommorrow’s pharmacists. However, there is not such a program in China, mainland.

Phrm.D program in UCSF School of Pharmacy.

The Pharm.D program in UCSF School of Pharmacy is a full-time, 4-years course of study that provides an educational foundation for a career in pharmacy. Every year there approximately will be 1,500 applicants who want to enter UCSF School of Pharmacy, but only 122 lucker ones will  get the admission, which means it’s really competitive. In West China School of Pharmacy, approximately 200 students will get admission each year.

If you want to go to UCSF School of Pharmacy for Pharm.D program you should have these minimum eligibilites. First the Grade Point Average Requirement or GPA. The applicants must have a minimum, cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.80 as calculated by PharmCAS. PharmCAS is short for Pharmacy Colleges Admission Service, which is organization for pharmacy school admission. (more…)
